Why has my candle tunnelled?

The most common reason for candle tunnelling is not lighting it properly the first time. When you light a new candle for the first time, it’s crucial to do it right since it affects every burn after that. So take care when lighting your candle for the first time.

Make sure you have few hours free, as fully melting the wax on the surface takes longer first time around. For smaller candles, it takes around 2 to 3 hours to melt the wax completely. Larger candles, especially those with a single wick, may need at least 4 hours or until the entire surface is melted before extinguishing.

If you burn a candle for an hour, only part of the wax melts. The unmelted wax will stay that way for all future burns. That why it’s so important to get a full burn across the surface during the first use.
